What happens if I do not complete drug testing and medical evaluations?  

Depending on the violation, you can be fined a minimum of $500 up to $10,000. These fines are per violation. For example, if your company had four drug tests required and failed to complete them, you could be fined up to $40,000.
Any violation pertaining to HAZMAT or vehicles with multi passengers has higher fines - averaging double.
  • The average fine for not completing the required drug testing is $5,000.
  • The average fine for not completing required drug testing for HAZMAT vehicles is $10,000.
  • If a driver gets a ticket for an expired medical card, the motor carrier can be given a fine for each time that driver leaves the property with the expired medical card. Ie, if the company gets audited, and they see that this driver was driving for two months on an expired card before he got a ticket, the motor carrier can be fined for each time he left the property. Thus, if it were 32 times during the 2 months, they could be fined a minimum of $16,000.

Do I have to have a drug screen when I have a DOT physical? 
  • No. Urine is collected for checking for kidney disease and diabetes.
